dnsforwarder or dnsresolver with forwading checked

So I know I should be forwarding rather than resolving because less traffic over wan for forward vs iterations resolve.  I do however need one domain to use ad ds dns over vpn so I have setup the domain override area and some host overrides in the resolver area.

Now to the question. Resolver will cache DNS responses this is great. If I enable the forwarding option in the dnsresolver does that mean I will basically be forwarding the dns queries to an outside dns avoiding the iterations across the wan, but I will still get to cache the dns response and serve it internally?Or will it just forwad all queries without either running or checking a local cache? Be able to provide a cached result without having the dnsresolver do the iteration is kind of a best of both worlds?
